Activate Seniors

Explore theatre by making theatre. This is an inclusive space for teenagers aged 15 to 18 to explore their creativity, have new experiences, develop and hone their theatre skills, make friends, build confidence and have fun.

Activate Senior members take part in weekly workshops where they explore their creative potential through theatre games, exercises and projects. They develop artistic, personal and social skills by taking part in a varied and wide range of workshops including script writing, physical theatre, devising and performance. Members have an opportunity to showcase their work through annual productions and performance events where they can learn key skills in theatre design and technical theatre.

Activate Senior members often take part in projects with other youth arts organisations both locally and nationally, including the National Youth Theatre at the Abbey Theatre, the Young Critics Programme, Midsummer Meetup at the Cork Midsummer Festival, READ ON at West Cork Literary Festival, and the National Festival of Youth Theatres.

Workshops include script writing, improvisation, clowning, physical theatre, devising, and performance. Members have an opportunity to showcase their work through annual showcases and events where they can learn key skills in performance and theatre design.

Activate is my favourite thing to do and if it we had a workshop everyday I would go. I’ve made new friends, I’ve discovered a new hobby, I’m learning about theatre and having fun all the time.

Even though I am in Leaving Cert I still make the time to go to the workshops simply because I love it so much. The atmosphere is always joyful and I know that if I am having a bad week at school that attending a 2 hour workshop will not only brighten my day but allow me to clear my mind and express how I am feeling through the various exercises…We are supported and encouraged to express ourselves and to think outside the limits of our own creativity. An idea from a young person is never shut down. We do not produce shows that we as Activate members are not passionate about. The youth voice is at the centre of everything we do and I believe that is something extremely special and rare.

He likes that the material that Graffiti presents is developed by the students themselves and so is more organic to learn and perform. He attended other drama groups before Graffiti which put an emphasis on learning scripts and auditioning for roles in other productions, he found that very stressful and was unwilling to put himself forward to learn for parts with a lot of text, he is very dyslexic and struggles to learn lines. He also likes that it gives a voice to his group.
